Lac des Trois Caribous is a major lake in Quebec, Canada. It's located in an area called Haute-Batiscanie, within the unorganized territory of Lac-Croche. This area is part of the La Jacques-Cartier Regional County Municipality in the Capitale-Nationale region.
The main activity around the lake is forestry, which means growing and harvesting trees. People also enjoy recreational activities like fishing or boating here.
The lake's surface usually freezes over from early December until the end of March. However, it's safest to walk or play on the ice from late December to early March.
About the Lake
Lac des Trois Caribous is about 4.7 kilometres (2.9 mi) long and 1.3 kilometres (0.81 mi) wide. It sits at an elevation of 407 metres (1,335 ft) above sea level.
This lake is surrounded by mountains and has a unique shape, like a boomerang opening towards the west. It also has four small islands. A part of the lake called Tilney Bay receives water from two other lakes, Faiseur de Pluie and Adélard-Harvey.
Where is it Located?
The lake's outlet (where water flows out) is located:
- 2.5 kilometres (1.6 mi) northeast of Lone Pine Mountain.
- 7.0 kilometres (4.3 mi) northeast of the Canadian National Railway tracks.
- 5.1 kilometres (3.2 mi) southwest of the Laurentides Wildlife Reserve.
- 11.5 kilometres (7.1 mi) east of the village of Lac-Édouard.
- 17.9 kilometres (11.1 mi) southeast of Saint-Henri Lake.
Water Flow
From Lac des Trois Caribous, the water flows into another lake called Lac de Travers. Then, it travels about 8.1 kilometres (5.0 mi) along the rivière aux Castors Noirs (Black Beavers River), passing through lac aux Biscuits. Finally, this water joins the upper part of the Batiscan River. The Batiscan River then flows south until it reaches the northwest shore of the Saint Lawrence River.
Name Origin
The name "Lac des Trois Caribous" means "Lake of the Three Caribou". This name was officially recognized on December 5, 1968, by the Commission de toponymie du Québec, which is like a government body that names places in Quebec.
