One of the animals found was the golden bandicoot. This is a small marsupial, which means it carries its babies in a pouch. Golden bandicoots are usually shy. They are mostly active at night. They like to dig for insects and roots to eat.
Golden-backed Tree-rats
The other special animal discovered was the golden-backed tree-rat. This is a type of rodent that lives in trees. It has a beautiful golden-colored back. These rats are also nocturnal, meaning they are active at night. They build nests in tree hollows or among branches.
Both the golden bandicoot and the golden-backed tree-rat are considered endangered. This means their numbers are very low. Places like Lachlan Island are important for helping these animals survive.
