Lacy Park facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Lacy Park is a beautiful public park in the city of San Marino, California. You can find it in the San Rafael Hills. The park offers a large open space for everyone to enjoy.

What is Lacy Park?

Lacy Park opened its gates in 1925. It covers more than thirty acres right in the middle of San Marino. Long ago, this land was part of a big Mexican land grant from the 1800s. It was called Rancho Huerta de Cuati. Before becoming a park, it was known as Wilson Lake in 1875. The city bought the land in 1925 and turned it into the park we see today.

Park Features and Fun

Lacy Park is famous for its amazing collection of trees. It has a beautiful rose garden too. You can also find a special monument there. This monument honors General George Patton. He was a famous general who once lived in San Marino.

If you have a dog, you can bring them to the park. Just make sure they are on a leash. In 2008, the city thought about building a special dog park inside Lacy Park. This idea came from a local resident working on an Eagle Scout project. But many other residents did not like the idea, so it was not built.

Visiting the Park

It is free to enter Lacy Park during the week. However, if you do not live in San Marino, there is a small fee. On Saturdays and Sundays, non-residents pay $5 to get in. The city says this fee helps pay for park upkeep. It also helps with improvements.

Park's Natural History

In the middle of Lacy Park, there is a low area. This spot was once a "sag pond." A sag pond is a dip in the ground. It forms when the earth moves along a fault line. This one formed because of the Raymond Fault. The lake that was once here, called Wilson Lake or Kewen Lake, was drained in the 1920s. You can still see signs of the fault. Look for a small ridge in the northern part of the park. It is near Virginia Road.
