The San Rafael Hills are a group of hills in Los Angeles County, California. They are part of the Transverse Ranges, a larger mountain system. These hills are located next to the San Gabriel Mountains and look out over the Los Angeles Basin.

Where Are the San Rafael Hills?

The San Rafael Hills are home to many different communities. These include parts of Pasadena, South Pasadena, and Glendale. Other areas like Eagle Rock and Mount Washington are also found here.

These hills help shape the valley areas of Pasadena and San Marino. They also hold a big underground water supply, called an aquifer. This aquifer is on the north side of the hills and gets water from the San Gabriel Valley.

A Look Back: History of the Hills

For more than 8,000 years, the San Rafael Hills were the home of the Tongva people. They were a Native American group with many settlements in the area.

Later, in the late 1700s, Spanish explorers came to California. They took over the land and started new settlements. The hills are named after the Rancho San Rafael. This was a large piece of land given by the Spanish in 1784, located west of the hills.
