The Lagos Lagoon is a large body of water in Nigeria. It's a type of lagoon, which means it's a shallow stretch of seawater separated from the ocean by a narrow piece of land. This lagoon is named after the famous city of Lagos, which sits right on its southwestern edge. It's a very important natural feature for the city and the surrounding areas.

Exploring the Lagos Lagoon
The Lagos Lagoon is quite big! It stretches for more than 50 kilometres (31 miles) (about 31 miles) in length. Its width can change, being anywhere from 3 to 13 kilometres (1.9 to 8.1 miles) (2 to 8 miles) wide.
How the Lagoon is Formed
A long strip of sand separates the lagoon from the mighty Atlantic Ocean. This sand strip is about 2 to 5 kilometres (1.2 to 3.1 miles) (1 to 3 miles) wide. On the lagoon side, this sandy area has many swampy parts.
Size and Depth
The total surface area of the Lagos Lagoon is huge, covering about 6,354.7 square kilometres (2,453.6 square miles) (2,453.6 square miles). Even though it's so wide, the lagoon is actually quite shallow. This means that very large ships that travel across oceans cannot sail through it. However, smaller barges and boats use the lagoon regularly for transport and fishing.
