The Laia were an Indigenous Australian people. They lived in the state of Queensland, Australia.
Where Did the Laia People Live?
A famous researcher named Norman Tindale estimated the Laia people's traditional lands. Their territory covered about 2,100 square miles (5,400 km²).
Laia Territory Boundaries
- Their land was north of the Palmer River.
- It stretched east towards the Great Dividing Range.
- To the west, their country reached the headwaters of the Alice River.
Other Names for the Laia
The Laia people were also known by a few other names:
- Koko Laia
- Kokowara – This name was given by the Kuku Yalanji people. An exonym is a name that another group uses for a people. This name meant 'bad speech'.
- Coo-coo-warra
