About Laila Havilio
Early Life and Education
Laila Havilio was born in April 1960 in Recoleta, Chile. When she was 10 years old, her family moved to Buenos Aires, Argentina. This is where her artistic journey began.
From 1980 to 1983, Laila studied ceramics. She learned from a skilled sculptor named Ingeborg Ringer. In 1993, she moved to Paris, France. There, she continued to learn about sculpting. She focused on high-temperature ceramics with sculptor Vivianne Cheveron.
Learning New Skills
In 1995, Laila moved back to Chile. She attended the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile. Here, she learned to work with new materials. These included wood and stone.
At the same time, she started working at "La Obra." This was a famous place where metal sculptures were made. Laila learned a special way to make metal sculptures. It is called the Lost-wax casting method. This helped her create beautiful sculptures from bronze and other metals.
Laila's Art and Recognition
First Exhibitions
In 2001, Laila Havilio showed her art at the Galeria de arte San Francisco in Chile. This was a big step for her. It helped her become well-known as an artist.
International Recognition
Just two years later, in 2003, Laila received a special honor. The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) chose her. The IDB is a group that helps countries in North and South America. They picked Laila to represent Chile in their art collection in Washington, D.C.
Around the same time, more of her sculptures were shown. They were displayed at the Embassy of Chile in Washington, D.C.. Since then, Laila's work has often been featured. You can find her art talked about in Chilean newspapers, on television, and on the radio.
