Recoleta is a special area in Chile. It is called a commune. It is located in the northern part of Santiago Province. This area is part of the Santiago Metropolitan Region, which is where the capital city of Chile is found.

Recoleta is surrounded by other communes. To its south is Santiago. To the east are Providencia and Vitacura. To the west, you'll find Independencia and Conchalí. Huechuraba is located to the north. The Mapocho River and the San Cristóbal Hill form natural borders for Recoleta.

In 2002, a count of the people living in Recoleta was done. This count is called a census. The National Statistics Institute found that Recoleta covers about 16.2 square kilometers (about 6.25 square miles).

At that time, 148,220 people lived there. This included 72,314 men and 75,906 women. Everyone in Recoleta lives in an urban area, meaning it's a city or town, not a countryside area. The number of people living in Recoleta went down a bit between 1992 and 2002.
