About Lake Anahuac

Lake Anahuac is a large body of water that was created for a specific purpose. It's a reservoir, which means it holds water that can be used by people. This lake helps manage water resources in the area.

Where is Lake Anahuac?

This lake is found in the state of Texas, in the United States. It's located in Chambers County, which is a county in the southeastern part of Texas. If you were in Houston, you would travel about 45 miles (72 kilometers) to the east to reach it. The town of Anahuac sits right on the eastern edge of the lake.

How Lake Anahuac Was Made

Lake Anahuac wasn't always a lake. A long time ago, this area was actually a part of a bay called Turtle Bay. A bay is a part of the ocean or a large lake that is partly enclosed by land.

In the early 1900s, the entrance to Turtle Bay was closed off. This was done to create the lake we know today. The main dam and a system of levees (which are like walls to hold back water) were finished in 1954. The Burkhalter family helped build the lake, starting in 1953.
