Lake Bella Vista is a beautiful lake located in the northwest part of Cannon Township. This area is in Kent County, within the U.S. state of Michigan. It's a popular spot for people living nearby.
The lake wasn't always called Lake Bella Vista. It used to be known as "Grass Lake." Back then, it was a smaller lake surrounded by marshland, fields for animals, and fruit farms with apple and cherry trees. Grass Lake was one of three lakes in the area, often called the "triplet lakes." Its two sister lakes, Silver Lake and Bostwick Lake, are located to the east.
In the mid-1970s, a company called Velting family contractors developed the area. They made Grass Lake much bigger and built a large wall, called a dike, on its western side. This dike helped to raise the water level of the lake. Soon after, homes and businesses were built around the lake. Today, the area around Lake Bella Vista is a lively community, with many homes forming a lakeside neighborhood also named "Lake Bella Vista."
Lake Bella Vista has clear boundaries. To the south, it's bordered by M-44, also known as Belding Road. Nine Mile Road is to the north, Blakely Road is to the west, and Myers Lake Avenue is to the east. South of the lake, you can find the Lockhart family orchards. This area also marks the beginning of the Stout Creek watershed, which flows through wooded hills formed by glaciers.
Lake Bella Vista and Local Schools
Students who live around Lake Bella Vista attend schools in the Rockford public school district. Younger students go to Crestwood Elementary. Middle school students attend East Rockford Middle School.
Sports on the Lake
Lake Bella Vista is sometimes used for sports activities. In the spring of 2013, the Rockford High School Rowing Team practiced on the lake. They used it because their usual practice spot, on the Grand River, was flooded and they couldn't access their boathouse there.
