Lake Conroe is a large lake in Montgomery County, Texas, United States. It covers about 21,000 acres (85 square kilometers). Even though it's called Lake Conroe, only a small part of the lake is actually inside the city of Conroe, Texas. Most of it is in the areas around the city.
This lake is a special kind of lake called a reservoir. This means it's a man-made lake, built to store water. Lake Conroe is located on the West Fork of the San Jacinto River. You can find it just west of Interstate 45 and off State Highway 105.

About Lake Conroe
Lake Conroe is a very popular spot for fun activities. Many people come here to enjoy boating, jet-skiing, and fishing. The lake is surrounded by beautiful East Texas Piney Woods forests.
The water in Lake Conroe is generally clean and clear. The lake is about 20.5 feet (6.2 meters) deep on average. At its deepest point, it goes down to about 75 feet (23 meters).
How the Lake Was Made
Lake Conroe was planned in 1970. Its main purpose was to provide a new source of water for the big city of Houston. Building the lake was finished in January 1973. It took a few months for the lake to fill up completely with water, which happened on October 31, 1973.
The lake stretches for about 21 miles (34 kilometers). It holds a huge amount of water, about 430,260 acre-feet (530 million cubic meters). A part of the lake, about 5,000 acres (20 square kilometers), is even located within the Sam Houston National Forest.
Who Manages the Lake?
The San Jacinto River Authority is in charge of managing Lake Conroe. They help make sure the lake is used properly and safely. The City of Houston also has a big interest in the lake, owning two-thirds of it. The San Jacinto River Authority owns the other one-third.
Famous Residents Near the Lake
Some well-known people have homes in the Lake Conroe area. These include famous athletes like Rudy Tomjanovich, Roger Clemens, and Aaron Gray. Also, professional motorcycle racer Colin Edwards lives nearby. Even Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick, who is a high-ranking elected official in Texas, has a residence in the area.
