Lake Eugenia is a special lake in Grey County. It's not a natural lake; it was made by people! You can find it in Eugenia, Ontario, about an hour and a half drive from Toronto. It's also just a few kilometers north of Flesherton. Many people call it a "hidden gem" because it's so beautiful.

History of Lake Eugenia
Lake Eugenia was created by people in the early 1900s. It was built to hold water for a power plant. This plant, called a hydro-electric dam, was built on the Beaver River in 1912.
In 1913, a group called the Hydro Electric Power Commission of Ontario bought a lot of land from local farmers. They bought about 1,900 acres (or 7.7 square kilometers) of land. This land was then cleared of trees and buildings. After that, it was flooded to create the lake we see today.
When the lake was first filled, its edges were very curvy. It had many small bays and inlets. In the 1950s, Lake Eugenia became a popular spot for people to visit. Locals started building small cabins along the shore. Soon, more and more people heard about this lovely place.
By the late 1900s, many of these cabins grew into large, fancy cottages. Today, these cottages are often big and modern. As the lake became more popular, people came from everywhere. Fishers, swimmers, boaters, and nature lovers all came to enjoy their holidays here. The area around Lake Eugenia is part of the Niagara Escarpment. This means it has amazing views all year round.
Fun on Lake Eugenia
Lake Eugenia is a great place for many outdoor activities. People love to visit for boating, staying in cottages, and fishing.
Boating Fun
Boating is very popular on Lake Eugenia. You can use both motorized boats, like speed boats, and boats you power yourself, like kayaks or canoes. If you're using a speed boat, you must stay at least 30 meters (about 100 feet) away from the shore.
Many different types of boats are seen on the lake. These include speed boats, fishing boats, kayaks, canoes, windsurfing boards, and rowboats. Most of the time, boaters and other lake users get along well. The O.P.P (Ontario Provincial Police) sometimes patrols the water on busy holiday weekends to make sure everyone is safe.
Cottages by the Lake
Having a cottage at Lake Eugenia is very popular. This is because it's close to big cities like Toronto, Owen Sound, and Collingwood. It's thought that there are about 400 cottages around the lake. This is even more than the number of people who live in the village of Eugenia all the time!
Because of its great location, cottages here can be quite expensive. Their prices have stayed high in recent years. Many cottages today are very large and look like modern homes. They are perfect for holiday getaways. All the cottages are right by the water. This means there's always lots of activity with people swimming, boating, and fishing.
Fishing in the Lake
Lake Eugenia is a favorite spot for people who love to fish. Both local fishers and visitors come here because of the different kinds of fish in the lake.
The main types of fish you can catch today include Rock Bass, Smallmouth Bass, Largemouth Bass, Perch, Sunfish, and Bullhead catfish.
A long time ago, before there were so many cottages, the main fish in the lake was trout. If you caught a fish, it was almost always a Brown or Rainbow Trout. But in the 1960s, a new fish, the Rock Bass, appeared. They quickly became very common. Back then, on the first day of trout season, people would catch so many Rock Bass that big barrels would overflow with them! Even with all the Rock Bass, you could still usually catch plenty of Rainbow Trout for a good meal.
