History of Southend

Southend has had a few different names over the years. The spot for the town was chosen by George Grey. He was the Governor of South Australia at the time. This happened just before he left his job in late 1845.

How the Town Was Started

Another governor, Frederick Robe, approved the town's location on March 19, 1846. Later that year, Thomas Burr helped to plan out the town. He was the Deputy Surveyor-General.

Changing Names

The town was first called Grey Town. This name honored Governor Grey. In 1912, its name was shortened to Grey. Then, on October 21, 1971, the name changed again to Southend.

The area, or "locality," of Southend has clear borders. These borders were set up in 1995 and 1997. The area stretches from the coast of Rivoli Bay in the west.
