Lake Ngaroto is a peat lake found in the Waipa District of New Zealand. It is known for its unique natural features.
The lake is located about 19 km south of Hamilton. It is also 8 km north-west of Te Awamutu. Lake Ngaroto covers an area of 108 ha (270 acres). This makes it the largest of the peat lakes in the Waipa area.
The water in Lake Ngaroto has many nutrients. This can cause a lot of tiny algae to grow. The lake's water is not very clear, and it is getting cloudier each year. In 2020, a health warning was given because of harmful tiny plant-like organisms called cyanobacteria.
The New Zealand Ministry for Culture and Heritage says that "Ngāroto" means "the lakes".
History of Lake Ngaroto
Lake Ngaroto has an interesting history. A famous battle, the Battle of Hingakaka, happened near the lake a long time ago.
During this battle, a very important carving called Te Uenuku was lost. This carving was found again in 1906. Today, you can see Te Uenuku at the Te Awamutu Museum.

Lake Ngaroto is a great place for outdoor fun. Many people visit the lake for different activities.
- Boating and Rowing: Power boats are not allowed on the lake. This makes Lake Ngaroto a calm place for sailing and rowing.
- Duck Shooting: During the duck shooting season in New Zealand (usually May and June), some people use the lake for duck hunting.
- Walking and Cycling: The Waipa District Council has built a 6 km path around the lake. Parts of the path are gravel, and other parts are wooden boardwalks. This path is popular for walking, running, and cycling. There are also public toilets available for visitors.
