Exploring Lake Norris

Where is Lake Norris Located?

Lake Norris is found about 2 miles (3.2 km) south of Johnson's Corner in Paisley. The northern side of the lake is home to Camp La-No-Che, a popular Boy Scout camp. On the southern side, water flows out into Blackwater Creek.

Who Owns the Land Around the Lake?

Most of the land around Lake Norris is owned by the St. Johns River Water Management District. This land is mostly covered with scrub brush. It helps drain water into the aquifer, which is an underground layer of rock or sand that holds water. Only about 11 private homes are located on the southeastern shore. There are no public places to access the lake or launch boats. The entire area is part of the amazing Ocala National Forest.

Wildlife and Nature at Lake Norris

What Makes the Water Brown?

The water in Lake Norris has a very brown color. This is because of the many cypress trees that grow all around the lake. These trees release something called tannic acid into the water. Tannic acid is a natural substance that stains the water, similar to how tea gets its color.

Amazing Animals of Lake Norris

Lake Norris is a busy place for wildlife. Boy Scouts at Camp La-No-Che have seen more than 100 active nests of Osprey birds in the cypress trees. Osprey are large birds of prey that love to fish. Other animals you might find here include alligators, different kinds of snakes, and gopher tortoises. It's a great place to observe nature!
