It is known as a census-designated place (CDP), which means it's a special area defined by the U.S. Census Bureau for statistical purposes. This community is located right next to a lake that shares its name. In 2020, about 1,058 people lived in Lake Secession.

Geography of Lake Secession
Lake Secession is actually a reservoir, which is a large, man-made lake used to store water. This reservoir was created on the Rocky River. The Rocky River is a smaller river that flows into the Savannah River.
Lake Features
The part of the dam where extra water flows out, called the spillway, is about 548 feet (167 meters) above sea level. The lake itself stretches north into Anderson County. However, the community of Lake Secession (the CDP) only includes homes built around the lake within Abbeville County.
