Lake Sparrow is a small, beautiful lake found high up in the mountains of New Zealand. It's known as a mountain tarn, which is a special type of lake. This peaceful spot is located inside Kahurangi National Park.

About Lake Sparrow

Lake Sparrow is a mountain tarn. A tarn is a lake that forms in a hollow or bowl-shaped area. This area is often carved out by a glacier (a huge, slow-moving river of ice). When the glacier melts, it leaves behind a basin that fills with water.

Where is Lake Sparrow?

This lovely lake is located in the Anatoki Range of mountains. These mountains are part of the South Island of New Zealand. Specifically, Lake Sparrow is in the Tasman Region. It is protected within the Kahurangi National Park. This park is a large area of wilderness.

How High and How Big is It?

Lake Sparrow sits very high up in the mountains. Its elevation is about 1,400 meters (or 4,600 feet) above sea level. Imagine climbing that high! The lake itself covers an area of about 4 hectares. That's roughly the size of four international rugby fields.

Lake Sparrow's Water Flow

The water from Lake Sparrow flows into a small stream. This stream is a "tributary," which means it's a smaller river that flows into a larger one. This particular tributary joins the Stanley River. The lake is very close to where the Stanley River begins, also known as its "headwaters." It's also located above another lake called Lake Stanley.
