Lake View is a small, unincorporated community located in Douglas County, Kansas, in the United States. It's found about one mile north of the city of Lawrence. An "unincorporated community" means it's a place where people live, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town.
A Look Back: The History of Lake View
Lake View began in 1892. It was first created as a fun lakeside resort, a place where people could go to relax by the water. This resort was popular for many years, staying open until the 1930s.
The Lake View Club and the Oxbow Lake
Today, a group called the Lake View club still takes care of the lake. This lake is special because it's an oxbow lake. An oxbow lake forms when a bend in a river gets cut off from the main river, creating a U-shaped lake.
Post Office and Railway Station
A post office opened in Lake View in 1898, though it was spelled "Lakeview" at the time. It helped people send and receive mail until it closed in 1914. Lake View was also a stop on the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway, which was an important train line for travel and trade.
