Lakes was a special kind of community in Matanuska-Susitna Borough, Alaska, United States. It was called a census-designated place (CDP). This means it was an area identified by the U.S. Census Bureau for collecting population data.
For the 2020 Census, Lakes was divided into two new CDPs. These are now known as North Lakes and South Lakes. The area is also part of the larger Anchorage metropolitan area. In 2010, the population of Lakes was 8,364 people. This was an increase from 6,706 people in 2000.
Geography of Lakes
Lakes is located in Alaska at 61°36′27″N 149°18′15″W / 61.60750°N 149.30417°W. It is found near the towns of Wasilla and Palmer.
The total area of Lakes was about 15.4 square miles (39.8 square kilometers). Most of this area, about 13.6 square miles (35.4 square kilometers), was land. The rest, about 1.7 square miles (4.5 square kilometers), was water. This means that about 11.25% of the area was covered by water.
The community is named for its many lakes. People can visit some of these lakes at the Finger Lakes State Recreation Site. This site offers public access for fun activities.
