The Lakeside Development, also known as the Lakeside Historic District, is a special neighborhood in southern Burlington, Vermont. It was built a long time ago by a company for its workers. This area is tucked away between the Vermont Railway train tracks and Lake Champlain. You can only get there by using Lakeside Avenue, which comes off Pine Street. The Queen City Cotton Company built this neighborhood between about 1894 and 1910. Their big factory was just east of the train tracks. This historic area was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.

What is the Lakeside Development?

The Lakeside Development covers about 17 acres (or 7 hectares) right on the shore of Lake Champlain. It's a neighborhood with homes, laid out in a small grid pattern. The main streets are Lakeside, Wright, Conger, Central, and Harrison Avenues.

What kinds of buildings are there?

Most of the buildings in this area are multi-family homes. This means they have several separate living spaces, from two to twelve units in one building. All the buildings are made of wood. Some of them have a brick look on the outside. There are five main designs for the buildings. The most common type is a duplex, which has two homes in one building. A large part of the neighborhood, surrounded by Central, Wright, Conger, and Harrison Avenues, is an open field. This field is a public space where people can relax and enjoy the outdoors.

Who built Lakeside Development?

This entire neighborhood was planned, built, and managed by the Queen City Cotton Company. It is the only neighborhood of its kind in Burlington that was built by a company for its employees. The company wanted it to be a complete little village. It originally had a church, grocery stores, a school, and even a billiard hall for fun.

What was the Queen City Cotton Company?

The Queen City Cotton Company was started by George A. Draper. His company was famous for making power looms, which are machines used to weave fabric. The cotton mill operated east of the railroad tracks until 1937. After that, the company sold off the homes, mostly to the people who were already living there.
