History of Lakewood
Lakewood started as a city called Dupontonia in 1959. It was named after a nearby factory. In 1961, the city changed its name to Lakewood. It also became a city again under the new name.
In 1963, the governments of Davidson County and Nashville joined together. They formed one big government called a "metropolitan government." Lakewood decided to stay a separate city. It was known as a "satellite city," meaning it was a smaller city near a larger one. Lakewood had its own city council and police department.
On August 5, 2010, people in Lakewood voted on whether to stop being a separate city. They voted to join the bigger Nashville government. The vote was very close: 400 people voted yes, and 399 voted no.
Because the vote was so close, the city of Lakewood filed a lawsuit. They said some people voted illegally. A judge ordered a new election. On March 15, 2011, residents voted again. This time, 458 people voted to join Nashville, and 447 voted to stay separate. So, Lakewood became part of Nashville.
