History of Lakewood Heights
How the Neighborhood Grew
Lakewood Heights grew because of a few key things. These helped the area become what it is today.
- Streetcar Lines: A streetcar line ran along Jonesboro Road. This made it easy for people to travel. It helped businesses and homes grow along the road.
- Factories and Jobs: An industrial area also grew nearby. This included a big General Motors car plant. It was called the Lakewood Assembly plant. Many people worked there.
- Schools and Community: A community grew around the Gammon Theological Seminary and Clark University. These were important schools. Today, The New Schools at Carver high school is on this site.
- Fairgrounds: The Southeast Regional Fairgrounds was built here. It was on the site of the city's first water plant. Streetcars made it easy to get to the fairgrounds from downtown Atlanta. This led to more homes being built nearby.
Model Homes and Community Growth
One part of Lakewood Heights is called Oak Knoll. In the 1930s, this area was known for its good homes. These homes were affordable for many families.
A special house at 1099 Oak Knoll Drive was even shown in Life magazine in 1938. It was a "model house." You could buy kits to build these homes all over the country. This showed how private companies could help provide good housing.
From Car Plant to Movie Sets
The neighborhood was once home to the Lakewood Fairgrounds. It had a racetrack called Lakewood Speedway until 1979. Now, the Lakewood Amphitheater is on the old fairgrounds. It is a place where concerts are held.
Around 1970, the area started to change. Many middle-class families moved away. The big General Motors car plant closed in 1990. This meant fewer jobs in the area.
Today, Lakewood Heights is a growing center for movies and TV shows. EUE/Screen Gems Atlanta built soundstages here in 2010. These are places where movies and TV shows are filmed. The film industry has brought new life to the area.
