Lakrisal facts for kids
Lakrisal is a popular candy from the company Malaco. It is a type of salty liquorice. This candy is sold in countries like Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland, and the Netherlands.
Unlike many other salty liquorice candies, Lakrisal is not chewy. It does not contain ingredients like starch or gum arabic. Instead, Lakrisal is mostly made of sugar, liquorice, and a salty ingredient called ammonium chloride. Because of this, Lakrisal drops are powdery. They are pressed into small, solid pieces, much like tiny tablets. People who need to watch their salt intake, like those with hypertension (high blood pressure), should not eat too much Lakrisal.

What Lakrisal Looks Like
Lakrisal is also different because it is not black. Most salty liquorice is black. Lakrisal is a light brownish-gray color. Each Lakrisal drop is shaped like a flat disk. They are about 18 millimeters wide and 4 millimeters thick. The candies are sold in small tubes. Each tube holds about 20 drops.
Different Flavors of Lakrisal
Over the years, Lakrisal has tried different flavors.
Lemon Lakrisal
In the 1980s, a new lemon-flavored Lakrisal was made. However, it was not very popular. It was soon stopped from being sold.
Hot Lakrisal
Another flavor was called "hot" Lakrisal. This version included chili pepper powder and pepper oil. It gave the candy a spicy kick.
The History of Lakrisal
Lakrisal is a continuation of an older product called Bronzol. Bronzol was first sold as a throat lozenge. It was advertised with a catchy slogan: "Health for the throat - Bronzol!" This was sung to a well-known tune. Throat tablets with liquorice or salmiak flavors have been made and sold in the Nordic countries since the 1950s. Even some cough medicines, like Quiller-syrup, use similar flavors.
Lakrisal is made by LEAF Holland B.V.
