Lambert Island is a small island found in Thunder Bay. This bay is on the northern shore of Lake Superior in Canada. The island is very close to Amethyst Harbour and Amethyst Beach. It is part of the Municipality of Shuniah, Ontario.
About Lambert Island
Lambert Island is a special place because it is privately owned. This means it belongs to a company called Lambert Island Ltd., not to the public. A bridge connects the island to the mainland. The people who own shares in the company take care of this bridge.
The island is known as a private summer getaway. Many people from the city of Thunder Bay, Ontario enjoy spending their summers there. It is a quiet and exclusive spot for vacations.
Orville Wright's Summer Home
Lambert Island has an interesting history. It was once owned by Orville Wright. He was one of the famous Wright brothers. They were pioneers in aviation, meaning they were among the first to fly an airplane.
Orville Wright spent his summers on Lambert Island for many years. He visited the island between 1916 and 1941. His sister, Katharine, often joined him there.
The "Kittyhawk" Boat
In 1931, Orville Wright bought a special boat. It was a 32-foot mahogany cruiser. This boat was built by the Gidley Boat Works in Penetanguishene, Ontario. Wright named his boat the "Kittyhawk."
He chose this name to remember a very important place. Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, was where the Wright brothers made their first successful flight in 1903. This historic flight used their airplane, the Wright Flyer. Orville Wright used his "Kittyhawk" boat in Georgian Bay for many years. Amazingly, the boat is still in use in the area today!
