Lamp facts for kids
A lamp is a special device that creates light. Most lamps today use electricity to power a lightbulb, which is the part that actually glows. Lamps are super important because they help us see in the dark, whether we're reading a book, doing homework, or just hanging out with friends.

How Lamps Work
Lamps might seem simple, but they use clever technology to make light. Inside most lamps, there's a lightbulb. When you plug a lamp into an electrical outlet and turn it on, electricity flows through the lightbulb. This electricity heats up a tiny wire inside the bulb, making it glow brightly. This is how we get light! Some newer lamps use different technologies, like LEDs, which are even more energy-efficient.
Lamps vs. Other Lights
Sometimes, it can be a bit confusing to know what to call a "lamp" and what to call a "light." In some places, like the United States, people usually call a "lamp" something you find inside a house, like a desk lamp or a floor lamp. Other things that make light, like streetlights outside or flashlights you carry, are often just called "lights." However, in other countries, these might be called "streetlamps" or "torches." It just depends on where you are!
A Look Back: The History of Lamps
Before electricity was common, people used different ways to light up their homes and streets. Imagine trying to read a book at night without an electric lamp! For a long time, people relied on candles, which are basically wax sticks with a wick that burns. Later, oil lamps became popular. These lamps burned oil to create a flame. Even later, gas lamps were used, especially in cities, to light up streets before electric streetlights took over. These older lamps were very useful, but they often produced smoke and weren't as bright or safe as modern electric lamps.
Different Kinds of Lamps
Lamps come in all shapes and sizes, each designed for a different purpose.
- Desk lamps are small and sit on your desk, giving you focused light for studying or drawing.
- Floor lamps are tall and stand on the floor, lighting up a larger area of a room.
- Table lamps are similar to desk lamps but are often used on side tables to add a cozy glow to a room.
- Decorative lamps like a lava lamp are mostly for fun and decoration rather than lighting up a whole room. They create cool visual effects!
