Lanark Castle was a very important castle in Lanark, Scotland. It was the main reason the town of Lanark grew up around it. Today, the castle is gone, but it used to stand high on the east bank of the River Clyde. This spot was close to where the Mouse Water river joins the Clyde. The area where the castle once stood is now a special protected site called a scheduled monument.

Why Was Lanark Castle Built?

The land where Lanark Castle stood was a key spot overlooking the Clyde Valley. Because of this, the Romans built a fort there a long time ago. This was during their short time in southern Scotland. Even after the Romans left, other forts were built on this same spot, which is still known as Castle Hill. It is just southwest of Lanark's modern town center.

Who Lived in Lanark Castle?

Lanark Castle was used as a home for Scottish kings. Two famous kings, David I and William the Lion, lived there at different times.

Was There a Parliament at Lanark Castle in 978?

Some old records say that Kenneth II of Scotland held a special meeting, called a parliament, at Lanark Castle in the year 978. However, this is probably not true. At that time, Lanark was part of a different kingdom called Strathclyde.

Historians believe that Lanark Castle was most likely built much later, during the time of King David I. It was probably finished by 1144. This was the year that Lanark officially became a "Royal Burgh," which meant it was a special town with royal protection.
