Lance Acord is an American cinematographer and film director. A cinematographer is the person in charge of how a movie looks. They decide on the camera angles, lighting, and overall visual style. Acord is well-known for his work on movies like Buffalo '66 (1998), Being John Malkovich (1999), Adaptation (2002), and Lost in Translation (2003). He is also a member of the ASC.

His Work in Film
Becoming a Cinematographer
Acord started his career working with photographer and filmmaker Bruce Weber. Together, they created documentaries, commercials, and music videos. He became widely known after filming the music video for Björk's song "Big Time Sensuality".
Throughout the 1990s, Acord worked a lot on commercials and music videos. He even won an MTV Video Music Award for Best Cinematography for his work on the Fatboy Slim music video "Weapon of Choice". This video famously featured actor Christopher Walken dancing. Acord also worked regularly with the band R.E.M..
Lance Acord then started working on feature films. He was the cinematographer for Vincent Gallo's movie Buffalo '66 (1998). He also worked on several films directed by Spike Jonze, including Being John Malkovich (1999), Adaptation (2002), and Where the Wild Things Are (2009). He also collaborated with director Sofia Coppola on movies like Lost in Translation (2003) and Marie Antoinette (2006).
Directing Commercials
In the late 1990s, Acord began directing commercials. In 1998, he started his own company called Park Pictures with his business partner Jackie Kelman Bisbee.
He has won many awards for his commercial work. These include 35 Cannes Lions, which are major awards for advertising. He has directed commercials for big companies like Nike, Apple, and Volkswagen.
One of his most famous commercials was "The Force" for Volkswagen in 2011. It was a Super Bowl ad that was named the best ad of the year by several publications. His Apple commercial "Misunderstood" won an Emmy Award in 2014. In 2019, he won another Emmy for the Nike commercial "Dream Crazy," which starred Colin Kaepernick.
In 2019, Acord directed a short film commercial for Xfinity called A Holiday Reunion. This film was based on the classic movie E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial and brought back actor Henry Thomas as Elliott.
