Lando is a small, quiet community in Chester County, South Carolina, in the United States. It's known as an "unincorporated community," which means it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. Lando used to be a busy "textile village," a place where many people worked in factories making cloth.
Today, Lando has a post office with the ZIP Code 29724. In the year 2000, about 89 people lived in the area covered by this ZIP Code.
History of Lando
Lando was first settled a long time ago, in the 1760s. Back then, it was called Walker's Mill. This spot was perfect for building "watermills" along Fishing Creek. Watermills used the power of flowing water to grind grain or power machinery.
For most of the 1900s, the main job provider in Lando was Manetta Mills. This factory was one of the biggest in the world for making blankets. Many people in the village worked there.
However, in 1991, the Manetta Mills factory closed down. This was a big change for Lando. The village lost most of its people, going from about 2,000 residents to only about 20 who still live there today.
In 2009, the old Lando School building was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it's recognized as an important historical site that should be preserved.
