Joël Landry Tsafack Nguémo (born November 28, 1985 – died June 27, 2024) was a talented footballer from Cameroon. He played as a defensive midfielder, which is a player who helps protect the defense.
Nguémo played for several clubs, including Nancy, Bordeaux, and Saint-Étienne in France. He also played for the Scottish club Celtic for a season.
He was an important player for the Cameroon national team from 2006 to 2014. He even played in the 2010 and 2014 World Cups. After retiring from playing, he became a youth football coach.

Club Career Highlights
Starting in Football
Landry Nguémo grew up in Dschang, a town in western Cameroon. He played for local teams there. When he was 13, he moved to Yaoundé to continue his football journey.
Playing for Nancy
Scouts from the French club Nancy noticed Nguémo in Yaoundé. They invited him to France for trials. He signed with the club when he was 15 years old.
Nguémo made his first team debut in August 2005. He was 19 at the time. His first start came a month later. In January 2009, he scored his first goal for Nancy. It was a winning goal in the 90th minute against Le Havre. He scored another dramatic 90th-minute goal in May 2009.
Loan to Celtic
In July 2009, Nguémo joined Celtic in Scotland on a one-year loan. He quickly became a fan favorite. He made his first game for Celtic in a friendly match against Cardiff City. He was even named the "man of the match."
His first official game was in a Champions League qualifying match. He played 35 games for Celtic during his loan. However, he did not score any goals for the club. After his loan, he returned to Nancy because the clubs could not agree on a permanent transfer fee.
Time at Bordeaux
In July 2011, Nguémo moved to another French club, Bordeaux. He signed a three-year contract. In his first season, he played in 33 league games. He helped Bordeaux finish fifth, which meant they qualified for the Europa League.
In October 2013, during a Europa League game, Nguémo had a health scare. He was taken to the hospital for tests. Luckily, the tests showed nothing serious. He quickly returned to playing just over two weeks later.
Later Career Clubs
In January 2015, Nguémo signed a short contract with Saint-Étienne in France. Later that year, he moved to Turkey. He joined Akhisar Belediyespor in August 2015. He played there for two years.
In January 2017, he moved to another Turkish club, Kayserispor. After his time in Turkey, Nguémo played for Kongsvinger in Norway in 2019. After this, he decided to retire from playing football.
International Career
Landry Nguémo played 42 games for the Cameroon national team. He scored three goals for his country. He represented Cameroon in major tournaments like the 2010 and 2014 FIFA World Cups.
Coaching Career
After retiring as a player, Nguémo began coaching. In May 2020, he became the Under-18 manager for a French club called COS Villers-les-Nancy. In June 2021, he returned to his former club, AS Nancy, as a youth coach.
Personal Life and Passing
Landry Nguémo had an interesting hobby: he was a falconer. This means he trained birds of prey. He had a collection of these birds. His favorite was a white-tailed eagle named Mr. George.
He also became a French citizen in December 2007.
Sadly, Landry Nguémo passed away in a car accident. The accident happened near the town of Obala in Cameroon on June 27, 2024.
