History of Langley
Langley is located on State Highway 82. It sits at the western end of the Pensacola Dam. This dam is a very important structure. It is even listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The dam helps to create the beautiful Grand Lake o' the Cherokees, also known as Grand Lake.
Building the Pensacola Dam began in 1935. Cliff Bogle, who owned land in the area, decided to divide his property into smaller pieces for homes. In 1937, the town of Langley was officially started. There was even a public event where people could get free lots of land!
The town was named after J. Howard Langley. He was an important person in Oklahoma politics, serving as a state senator. Langley officially became an incorporated town on November 20, 1939. This meant it could have its own local government. A post office was also opened on January 20, 1939.
The Pensacola Dam was finished in 1941. After the dam was completed, Langley started to become a popular spot for fun and recreation. People came to enjoy the lake and outdoor activities.
