Scientific classification
Genus:
Metrosideros
Species:
albiflora

The Metrosideros albiflora, often called large white rātā, Northland white rātā, or simply white rātā, is a special plant found only in New Zealand. It's a type of forest liane, which means it's a woody vine that climbs up trees. You might also hear it called akatea.

This plant is one of three rātā vines that have white flowers. The name "albiflora" actually means "white flowered," which is a perfect description! Even though there are other white rātā plants, the large white rātā stands out because its leaves and flowers are much bigger. In fact, its flowers are some of the largest among all rātā plants, similar in size to the bright scarlet rātā and the famous pōhutukawa.

You'll mostly find the large white rātā growing in Kauri forests. It lives in the northern parts of the North Island, from the Kaimai Ranges all the way up to Te Paki.

What Does It Look Like?

The flowers of the large white rātā are a beautiful pure white. They usually bloom between October and March, which is during spring and summer in New Zealand.

The leaves of this plant can grow up to 9 centimeters (about 3.5 inches) long. They feel a bit leathery to the touch. This vine can climb really high, sometimes up to 10 meters (about 33 feet) tall!

If the large white rātā doesn't have anything to climb on, it won't just spread along the ground. Instead, it will grow into a large, bushy plant. You can see examples of this in places like Waima, Northland, where new forests are growing.

Where Does It Grow?

The large white rātā is a native plant of New Zealand. This means it naturally belongs there and isn't found growing wild anywhere else in the world. It thrives in the warm, moist conditions of New Zealand's forests.

It prefers to grow in areas where its base is shaded, and the soil stays moist. This helps the plant get enough water and protects its roots from drying out.

Is It Endangered?

Good news! As of 2012, the large white rātā is not considered to be a threatened plant. This means it's not currently at risk of disappearing, which is great for New Zealand's unique plant life.

Growing Your Own Large White Rātā

If you're interested in gardening, growing the large white rātā can be a bit tricky. It's known for being a plant that needs specific care, so it's not very common in home gardens. However, you can sometimes find it at special plant nurseries that focus on native plants.

Besides its big white flowers, the new leaves of the large white rātā often have a pretty reddish color. Remember, if you try to grow one, it likes its base to be in the shade and needs to be kept well-watered!

There's even a special type of large white rātā called Metrosideros albiflora 'Northland'. This specific variety is listed in some plant catalogs.
