Larisa Yevgenyevna Lazutina (born June 1, 1965) is a famous former cross-country skier from Russia. She was an amazing athlete who won many medals in skiing competitions. Cross-country skiing is a sport where skiers move across snow-covered terrain using skis and poles. It's a tough sport that needs a lot of strength and endurance!

Larisa Lazutina's Amazing Career

Larisa Lazutina started her Olympic journey in 1988. She won her first Olympic gold medal in 1992 as part of a team. At the 1994 Winter Olympics, she won another gold medal in a team relay race.

Olympic Success in 1998

The 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan, were her most successful. Larisa won five medals there! She earned three gold medals, one silver, and one bronze. This made her the most successful athlete at those Winter Games. After her amazing performance, the President of Russia, Boris Yeltsin, gave her the special title of Hero of the Russian Federation. This is a very high honor in Russia.

World Championship Medals

Larisa Lazutina also won many medals at the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships. She earned a total of sixteen medals. These included eleven gold medals, three silver medals, and two bronze medals. She was also the first person to win the women's 30 km event three times at the famous Holmenkollen ski festival in Norway. She won this event in 1995, 1998, and 2001.

Challenges in 2002

In 2002, Larisa competed in her fifth Olympic Games. She initially won two more medals. However, a ruling by the Court of Arbitration for Sport later changed these results. In February 2004, the International Olympic Committee removed her 2002 Olympic medals.

Sports Park Named After Her

In 2015, a sports park was opened in Odintsovo, Russia, and named after Larisa Lazutina. Its full name is the Sports and Recreational Park of Hero of Russia Larisa Lazutina. It's a great way to remember her achievements!

Personal Life

Larisa Lazutina is married to another cross-country skier, Gennady Lazutin.
