Larry Jeffery "Mutt" Black (born July 20, 1951 – died February 8, 2006) was an amazing American sprinter. A sprinter is a runner who specializes in short, fast races. Larry won a gold medal in the 4x100 meter relay race and a silver medal in the 200 meter race at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich. He was a true champion on the track!

Larry Black: A Champion Sprinter
Larry Black was born in Miami, Florida, a sunny city in the United States. He went to Miami Killian Senior High School. Larry was very good at running, and his talent earned him a scholarship to North Carolina Central University. His coach at Miami Killian was Leroy Daniels.
Early Life and College Success
While studying at North Carolina Central University, Larry continued to shine in athletics. In 1971, he won the NCAA 220 yard championships. The NCAA organizes sports competitions for college athletes across the United States. Winning this championship showed everyone how fast and talented Larry was.
Olympic Glory in 1972
The year 1972 was very special for Larry Black. He competed in the Summer Olympics held in Munich, Germany. He was part of the American 4x100 meter relay team. In a relay race, four runners each run a part of the total distance. Larry ran the first part of the race.
His team worked together perfectly. They won a gold medal and even matched the world record for the 4x100 meter relay, finishing in an incredible 38.19 seconds! Larry's cousin, Gerald Tinker, who was also from Miami, ran the third part of that same gold medal-winning race. Larry also earned a silver medal in the individual 200 meter race, showing his speed in single events too.
Life After Sports
After his amazing career in sports, Larry Black returned to his hometown of Miami. He continued to serve his community by becoming the director of the city's parks and recreation department. This job meant he helped manage and improve the parks and fun activities for people in Miami.
Larry Black passed away on February 8, 2006, in Miami, at the age of 54. He is remembered as a fantastic athlete and a dedicated community leader.
