Larry Ernest Blackmon was born on May 29, 1956. He is an American singer and musician. Larry is best known as the lead singer and founder of the famous funk and R&B band called Cameo.

Larry Blackmon's Music Journey
Larry Blackmon started his music career by forming a band called "East Coast." Later, he created a group named the "New York City Players." He wanted this group to be a partner to another band called the Ohio Players.
However, Larry had to change the group's name because of a conflict. He then decided to call the group Cameo. Before Cameo, Larry lived in Harlem, New York. He played drums on several hit songs for the band Black Ivory.
Larry Blackmon is known for his special singing style. He also had a unique look. He often wore a tall, faded haircut called a hi-top fade. He also wore a special cover over his pants called a codpiece.
One of his most famous trademarks is his signature "Ow!" sound. He used this sound as an intro for some of Cameo's songs. This "Ow!" sound is often used to show excitement or amazement.
The group Cameo performed at Adventureland Palace on April 26, 1978. Larry Blackmon also started another funk group called CA$HFLOW in Atlanta. This group had a hit song called "Mine All Mine" in 1986.
Working with Other Artists
Larry Blackmon also worked with other musicians. In 1987, he sang backup vocals on Ry Cooder's album Get Rhythm. He also sang on Cyndi Lauper's album A Night to Remember in 1989.
Larry helped produce songs for other artists too. He was a co-producer on Eddie Murphy's album So Happy in 1989. The special snare drum sound that Larry created for Cameo's songs like "Word Up!" and "Candy" became very popular. Many other artists copied this drum sound in their own music.
