College Football Highlights
Larry Ferguson started gaining attention in 1960, during his junior year at the University of Iowa. He made some incredible plays that season. In the very first game against Oregon State, he scored an 85-yard touchdown! The next week, he ran back an intercepted pass for a 70-yard touchdown.
Later that season, in a big game against Ohio State, Larry had another amazing 91-yard touchdown run. This helped Iowa win 35-12 and share the 1960 Big Ten title. Because of his great performance, he was chosen as a first-team All-Big Ten player and a first-team All-American.
Overcoming Injury
In 1961, Larry faced a challenge. He got a serious knee injury in the first game of the season. This meant he couldn't play for the rest of that year. He was given a "medical redshirt," which allowed him to play another year of college football later.
Larry came back strong for his senior season in 1962. He led the Hawkeyes in rushing, gaining 547 yards. He was again named All-Big Ten. As the team captain, he helped Iowa beat both Michigan and Ohio State in the same season. This was the first time Iowa had ever done that!
Records and Recognition
Larry Ferguson played in the 1963 College All-Star Game, which featured top college players. His average of 7.39 yards per carry in 1960 is still a school record at Iowa. This means he gained a lot of yards every time he ran with the ball.
In 1989, when the University of Iowa football team celebrated its 100th anniversary, fans voted for their all-time favorite players. Larry Ferguson was honorably mentioned as one of the best running backs in the team's history.
Professional Football Career
After his successful college career, Larry Ferguson played professional football. In 1963, he played one season for the Detroit Lions in the National Football League (NFL).
He then moved to Canada to play in the Canadian Football League (CFL). He played for the Edmonton Eskimos from 1964 to 1965. After that, he joined the Toronto Argonauts, where he played from 1965 to 1967.
