Larry "Schoolboy" Kimbrough
Larry Kimbrough was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He went to Benjamin Franklin High School. Larry was a star player on his school's baseball team. In 1941, he even pitched a "no-hitter" game. This means no one on the other team got a hit!
Early Life and Unique Skills
Larry was naturally left-handed. But when he was a child, he got an injury. While he was getting better, he learned to throw with his right hand too. This amazing skill made him a "switch pitcher." It meant he could use either arm to pitch during a game. This made him very unique in baseball.
Playing in the Negro Leagues
Larry Kimbrough played in the Negro leagues from 1942 to 1944. He then served in the US Army during World War II. After the war, he returned to baseball in 1946.
Baseball records from that time are not always complete. It is thought that Larry pitched about 16 innings in his career. He also played in the outfield in some games. Larry himself said that he once won a game in 1943 by pitching with both arms. Other records show he won that game, but they don't specifically say he used both arms. In 1948, he was on the roster for the Homestead Grays. He played in some exhibition games for them.
Later Life
Larry Kimbrough passed away in Philadelphia in 2001. He was 77 years old.
