Larry Neil Vanderhoef (born March 20, 1941, died October 15, 2015) was an important American scientist and educator. He was the fifth leader, or chancellor, of the University of California, Davis (UC Davis).

Early Life and Education
Larry Vanderhoef was born in Perham, Minnesota. His parents were Wilmar James and Ida Lucille.
He studied biology at the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee. He earned two degrees there. Later, he got his Ph.D. (a very high degree) in plant biochemistry from Purdue University. This means he was an expert in how plants work at a chemical level.
Larry loved studying how plants grow and develop. He also looked into how "land-grant universities" changed over time. These are special universities that focus on agriculture and engineering. He taught students from their first year all the way to advanced levels.
Leading UC Davis
In 1994, Larry Vanderhoef became the fifth chancellor of UC Davis. This is like being the principal of a very large university. He helped lead the university for more than 15 years.
During his time as chancellor, he worked on many important groups. These groups discussed topics like education for advanced students and how universities should work in today's world.
Stepping Down as Chancellor
On June 2, 2008, Larry Vanderhoef announced he would leave his role as chancellor. His last day was June 30, 2009. After he left, Linda P.B. Katehi became the new chancellor of UC Davis.
Later Life and Legacy
Larry Vanderhoef passed away on October 15, 2015. He had health problems from strokes that started in 2012. He is remembered for his long service and leadership at UC Davis.
