Lars Hans Carl Abraham Forssell (born January 14, 1928 – died July 26, 2007) was a famous Swedish writer. He was also a member of the important Swedish Academy. Lars Forssell wrote many different kinds of things. These included poetry, plays, and songwriting. He won the Bellman Prize two times, in 1968 and 1981.
Early Life and Education
Lars Forssell was born in Stockholm, Sweden, in 1928. He went to a local elementary school called Kungsholms Folkskola. This school was very large for its time. It could hold 3,800 students. Sometimes, over 6,000 students were enrolled there!
He also studied in the United States during the 1940s. After that, he returned to Sweden. In 1952, he earned a degree from the University of Uppsala.
Writing Career
While studying at the University of Uppsala, Lars Forssell started working. He became a reporter for Swedish newspapers and magazines. Some of these included Utsikt and Dagens Nyheter.
At the same time, he began writing lyrics for cabaret shows. He even created his own shows, like Två åsnor (A Pair of Donkeys). This show was performed in Gothenburg in 1957. In 1966, he was a judge at the 16th Berlin International Film Festival. He also wrote for a funny magazine called Puss in the late 1960s.
Lars Forssell's poetry collections were very popular. Because of his writing, he became a member of the Swedish Academy in 1971. His song lyrics also made him well-known to many people. In the 1970s, he worked a lot as a poet. He also wrote lyrics for song contests, like the Swedish Eurovision Song Contest selection in 1973. He wrote songs for singer Lill-Babs in 1980.
He received many awards for his work. He won the Bellman Prize twice. He also received the Pilot Prize in 1992. Other awards include the Litteris et Artibus in 1993 and the Swedish Academy's Nordic Prize in 1998. His writings include poetry books, song lyrics, and children's books. He also wrote plays, opera stories (called librettos), and translated other works.
Personal Life
Lars Forssell married Kerstin Hane in 1951. They had two sons, Jonas and Malte Forssell. Lars Forssell passed away in Stockholm in 2007.
