What Was a Princely State?
A princely state was a special type of territory during the time of British rule in India. These states were not directly governed by the British. Instead, they had their own local rulers, often called "princes" or "Maharajas." However, these rulers had to agree to certain rules set by the British. The British usually handled their defense and foreign affairs.
Las Bela's Place in History
Las Bela was one of many such states. It was located in a region called Balochistan. The state was established around 1742. For many years, it kept its unique way of life and government.
The End of Las Bela as a State
After India and Pakistan became independent countries in 1947, the princely states had to decide their future. Las Bela chose to join Pakistan. It continued to exist as a state for a few more years. In 1955, Las Bela officially became part of the Karachi-Bela Division in Pakistan. This change meant it was no longer a separate princely state.
