The Las Cabañas Bridge (which means Puente de Las Cabañas in Spanish) is a special old bridge in Adjuntas, Puerto Rico. It was built in 1919 to help people get to an important area where a lot of coffee was grown.

Local coffee farms helped pay for the bridge. It was designed by Rafael Nones and built by Félix Benítez Rexach. These two people were very important in building bridges in Puerto Rico in the early 1900s.

They used a mix of steel and concrete to create a unique design. This bridge is different from any other bridge on the island, and maybe even beyond!

History and Purpose

The Las Cabañas Bridge was finished in 1919. Its main job was to connect the coffee-growing areas to the main roads. This helped farmers move their coffee crops to markets.

Before the bridge, it was harder to travel and transport goods in this part of Puerto Rico. The bridge made daily life and business much easier for the people living there.

A Unique Design

The engineer Rafael Nones and the builder Félix Benítez Rexach worked together on this project. They were known for their skills in bridge building.

They created a special type of bridge called a girder bridge. What makes it unique is how they combined steel and concrete. This mix made the bridge very strong and durable.

This design was new and different for its time. It showed how clever engineers were in Puerto Rico back then.

A Historic Landmark

Because of its unique design and importance to the area, the Las Cabañas Bridge was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places in 1995. This means it is recognized as a very important historical site.

Being on this list helps protect the bridge. It ensures that this piece of Puerto Rican history can be enjoyed and studied for many years to come.
