History of Juan González
How Puerto Rico Became a U.S. Territory
After the Spanish–American War, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This happened in 1898. It was part of a peace agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. After this, Puerto Rico became a special area of the United States. It is called an unincorporated territory.
Early Population Counts
In 1899, the United States Department of War did a count of all the people in Puerto Rico. This official count is known as a census. They found that the combined population of Juan González and a nearby community called Portugués was 1,235 people.
