Las Piedras is a city in the Canelones Department of Uruguay. It is one of the biggest cities in the country. In 2011, it was the seventh most populated city in Uruguay.
The name Las Piedras also refers to the local government area (municipality) that the city is part of.

Geography of Las Piedras
The city of Las Piedras is located on the east side of Route 5. It is about 2.5 kilometers (1.5 miles) north of the border with the Montevideo Department.
Las Piedras is close to La Paz to the south and Montevideo to the southeast. This means it is part of the larger metropolitan area of Montevideo. Two streams, Arroyo Colorado and Arroyo de las Piedras, flow near the city.
Climate in Las Piedras
The weather in Las Piedras has hot and humid summers. The winters are usually mild to cool. This type of weather is called a humid subtropical climate. On climate maps, it's often shown as "Cfa."
History of Las Piedras
Las Piedras was first started in 1744. Back then, it was known by the name "San Isidro."
A very important event happened here on May 18, 1811. The leader of Uruguay's independence, don José Gervasio Artigas, led his forces to victory against Spain. This battle is known as the Battle of Las Piedras. Even though it wasn't the final step, it was a big moment for Uruguay to become an independent country.
Before Uruguay became independent, Las Piedras was known as a "Pueblo" (which means village). Later, on May 15, 1925, it officially became a "Ciudad" (which means city) by law.

According to a count done in 2011, Las Piedras had 71,258 people living there. A census is like a big count of all the people in an area.
In 2010, the local government of Canelones estimated that the municipality had about 79,412 people during elections.
