Lauada is a small place in Swain County, North Carolina, in the United States. It's called an unincorporated community. This means it's a settlement that doesn't have its own local government, like a city or town.
Lauada is located where three important roads meet: U.S. Route 19, U.S. Route 74, and North Carolina Highway 28. It's about 5.1 miles (8.2 km) southwest of a town called Bryson City. You can also find the SCC Swain Center here, which is part of Southwestern Community College. It's a place where students can take classes.
History of Lauada
Lauada Cemetery's Story
Lauada is home to the Lauada Cemetery. This cemetery was created in 1943. It was built because of a big project: the construction of Fontana Lake. When the lake was being built, many older cemeteries were going to be covered by water.
To protect these burial sites, more than 1,000 graves were carefully moved from those old cemeteries to the new Lauada Cemetery. This helped make sure that the history and memories of the people buried there were preserved.
