These short plays were first written for 5th graders at The Park School. They were part of a special program to help teachers and improve lessons. The book was recognized for being excellent children's literature. It won the 2008 Newbery Medal.
About Splendors and Glooms
Splendors and Glooms tells the story of Clara Wintermute, a rich girl in London. For her birthday, she wants a puppet show from a group she saw in a park. The puppet master, Grisini, and his helpers, Lizzie Rose (14) and Parsefall (12), come to her home to perform.
Soon after the show, Clara goes missing. Someone demands money from her parents. Clara's father tries to pay, but the kidnapper doesn't show up. Meanwhile, an old witch uses magic to call Grisini to her home. The lives of all the children become mixed up with Grisini, the witch Cassandra, and the Wintermute family. Clara is actually hidden in plain sight the whole time.
