Laura Grace DeMarco is a math professor at Harvard University. She studies how things change over time, which is called dynamical systems. She also works in a special area of math called complex analysis.

Laura DeMarco's Career Path

Early Education and Research

Laura DeMarco earned her Ph.D. (a high-level university degree) from Harvard University in 2002. Her main teacher and guide for this degree was Curtis T. McMullen. After getting her Ph.D., she received a special grant called an NSF Postdoctoral Fellowship. This allowed her to continue her research.

Teaching and Professorship

From 2002 to 2005, she was an instructor at the University of Chicago. She then became an assistant professor there. Later, she moved to the University of Illinois at Chicago. At this university, she became a tenured professor. This means she earned a permanent teaching position.

In 2014, Professor DeMarco joined Northwestern University. She was promoted to the Henry S. Noyes Professor of Mathematics in 2019. In 2020, she returned to Harvard University as a professor.

Supporting Future Mathematicians

Professor DeMarco helps organize GROW. This stands for "Graduate Research Opportunities for Women." It is a conference for young women who are studying math in college. It helps them learn about research and future careers in mathematics.

Awards and Special Honors

Recognitions for Math Contributions

In 2013, Laura DeMarco became a fellow of the American Mathematical Society. This is a big honor for mathematicians. She was part of the very first group of fellows.

In 2017, she received the Ruth Lyttle Satter Prize in Mathematics. This award recognized her important work in several math areas. These include complex dynamics, potential theory, and arithmetic dynamics.

National Academy of Sciences

In 2020, Professor DeMarco was chosen as a member of the National Academy of Sciences. This is a very important group of top scientists in the United States. Being elected means she is recognized as one of the best in her field.

Speaking at Major Conferences

She was invited to speak at the 2018 International Congress of Mathematicians. This is a huge meeting where mathematicians from all over the world share their new ideas. She spoke about dynamical systems.

In 2023, she was the AWM-AMS Emmy Noether Lecturer. This lecture honors women who have made major contributions to mathematics. Her lecture recognized her important work in complex dynamics, arithmetic dynamics, and arithmetic geometry.

Alexanderson Award

Her work with Holly Krieger and Hexi Ye won the 2020 Alexanderson Award. This award is given by the American Institute of Mathematics. Their winning paper was about a specific type of math curve.
