What is Laura Nuño's Big Idea?
Laura Nuño earned her PhD, the highest university degree, from the Complutense University of Madrid. Her main research was about the sexual division of labor. This is the traditional idea that jobs are split based on gender. For example, men were expected to work and earn money, while women were expected to stay home and care for the family.
The Myth of the Male Breadwinner
Nuño wrote a book called El mito del varón sustentador. In it, she argues that the idea of a "male breadwinner" (a man who supports the whole family) is a myth. She says that one of the biggest changes of the 20th century was women joining the workforce.
However, she believes this change is not complete. While women took on new roles in public life, like having jobs, the old expectations for them at home didn't change. Nuño argues that this is a major cause of gender inequality, which means things are not fair between men and women.
A Career in Teaching and Research
Nuño began teaching at the Complutense University of Madrid in 1991. Today, she is a Professor of Political Science at King Juan Carlos University. There, she leads several important groups focused on fairness and equality.
- Gender Equality Observatory: This group watches for and works to fix unfairness at the university. In 2015, it won an award for its work to stop violence against women.
- Gender Studies Programs: She started the first university degree in Gender Equality in Spain. She also leads master's degree programs on the same topic.

She also teaches in other programs in Spain and even in other countries, like Nicaragua. She helped create the University Platform for Feminist and Gender Studies, which includes over 40 different university groups.
Working for the Government and Society
Besides teaching, Nuño is an expert member of the State Council for the Participation of Women. This group advises the Spanish government on issues important to women.
She is also active in many organizations that fight for equality. She has been a member of the Feminist Policy Forum and the CCOO trade union. She also has experience in politics, having served as a councilor in a town near Madrid and as a candidate for the Senate of Spain.
