Working for Civil Rights
Lauren Scott is a strong supporter of civil rights. In 2009, she started an organization called Equality Nevada, Inc. She was its leader until 2015. This group worked to make sure that all people, including those who are LGBTQ, have equal rights in Nevada. Equality Nevada was recognized as one of the best local organizations in Northern Nevada.
Scott also supported changing a military rule called "Don't ask, don't tell" in 2010. This rule prevented openly gay and lesbian people from serving in the military. It was later found to be against the US Constitution.
In 2011, Scott continued her work for civil rights in Nevada. She worked with groups like the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). Together, they helped pass new laws that protected the rights of transgender people in Nevada for the first time. Her efforts have been recognized by both the Nevada Assembly and the Senate.
In 2013, Scott spoke in favor of a bill called SB139. This bill aimed to add "gender identity and expression" to the state's hate crime laws. This means that crimes against people because of their gender identity would be taken very seriously. Governor Brian Sandoval signed this bill into law in May 2013.
