Laurie Sutton's Journey
Early Life and Discovering Comics
Laurie S. Sutton was born in Woodbury, New Jersey. Her dad worked for Mobil, so her family moved around the country a lot. When she was 8 years old, she got many comic books as a Christmas gift. This is how she started reading them and fell in love with comics!
After finishing college at Sarah Lawrence College in 1975, Laurie worked for a company called Abaris Books. She also worked for the Comics Code Authority. This group used to review comic books to make sure they were suitable for readers. Laurie felt her job was to help, not to censor. She wanted to be fair to the artists and writers.
Writing and Editing Comic Books
In 1980, Laurie began writing for DC Comics. She wrote stories for popular comics like "Adam Strange" in Green Lantern. She also contributed to Secrets of Haunted House, Star Trek, and The Unexpected.
A famous comic book artist, Frank Miller, has said that Laurie introduced him to Japanese comics. These comics later influenced his own work, like his series Ronin.
From 1981 to 1982, Laurie also worked as an editor at DC Comics. She helped manage a big story called "The Great Darkness Saga" in the Legion of Super-Heroes comic.
After leaving DC, Laurie worked for Marvel Comics' Epic Comics line from 1983 to 1985. She also worked for Donning Publishing for a few years. In the mid-1990s, she returned to comics. She wrote Star Trek: Voyager stories for Marvel.
Writing Children's Books and Awards
Laurie Sutton has written many children's books for Capstone Publishers. These books often feature popular DC Comics characters. She has said that Paul Levitz, a DC executive, helped her get this job.
In 2015, Laurie won a special award called the Publishing Innovation Award. She won in the "Ebook – Flowable: Children" category. This award was for her book Scooby-Doo!: The Terror of the Bigfoot Beast. It shows how much her work is appreciated!
