Lava Lake is a special kind of lake in northwestern British Columbia, Canada. It was formed when a huge flow of lava blocked a river. This created a natural dam, and water collected behind it to form the lake.

Lava Lake is found inside the Nisga'a Memorial Lava Bed Provincial Park. This park is a unique place where you can go fishing and hiking. It also has many other interesting natural features to explore.

How Lava Lake Was Formed

Lava Lake got bigger and deeper because of a volcanic event. This happened when hot, melted rock, called lava, flowed from a volcano known as the Tseax Cone. This event took place in the 18th century, which means it was about 300 years ago.

The Lava Flow

The lava from Tseax Cone flowed down and blocked the Tseax River. This created a natural barrier, like a wall, across the river. Water then started to build up behind this lava wall, forming Lava Lake.

After damming the river, the lava continued to flow. It traveled about 11 kilometers (7 miles) north towards the Nass River. There, it spread out and filled a flat valley for another 10 kilometers (6 miles). In total, this amazing lava flow stretched for about 22.5 kilometers (14 miles).

Canada's Youngest Lava Flow

This particular lava flow is one of the newest in all of Canada. It's a great example of how powerful and changing nature can be. The park protects this unique landscape, showing us how volcanoes can shape the land.

Exploring Nisga'a Memorial Lava Bed Provincial Park

The area around Lava Lake is part of the Nisga'a Memorial Lava Bed Provincial Park. This park is very important because it protects the land affected by the Tseax Cone eruption. It's also a place where you can learn about the history and culture of the Nisga'a people.

Activities in the Park

Visitors to the park can enjoy several outdoor activities.

  • Hiking: There are trails that let you walk across parts of the ancient lava flow. You can see how plants are slowly growing back on the rocky ground.
  • Fishing: Lava Lake is a good spot for fishing. It's a peaceful way to enjoy the natural beauty of the area.
  • Learning: The park has information about the volcanic eruption and its impact. You can also learn about the Nisga'a Nation, who have lived in this area for a very long time.

The park offers a chance to see a landscape that was dramatically changed by a volcano. It's a reminder of the Earth's powerful forces.
