Lawari Conservation Park is a special protected area in South Australia. It is located on the eastern end of Hindmarsh Island. This park helps to keep important natural areas safe for wildlife.

About Lawari Conservation Park

Lawari Conservation Park was officially created on March 21, 2017. It was set up under a law called the National Parks and Wildlife Act 1972. The park includes different pieces of land on Hindmarsh Island.

Why Lawari Park is Important

This park was created to protect important wetlands. Wetlands are areas where water covers the land, like swamps or marshes. These areas are home to many different kinds of fish and water birds. Some of these animals are rare or endangered.

In 2017, the park covered about 1.058 square kilometers. That's more than 100 football fields!

Protecting Special Animals

The Lawari Conservation Park is very important for wildlife. It protects three types of animals that are significant across Australia. It also helps 30 other animal species and one plant species that are important in South Australia.

For example, the park is a safe place for the Far Eastern Curlew. This is a large shorebird that travels long distances. The park also protects the Cape Barren Goose, a unique bird found in southern Australia.

Where Lawari Park is Located

The conservation park is part of a much larger wetland area. This bigger area is called the Coorong and Lakes Alexandrina and Albert Wetland. This entire wetland is recognized internationally as a Ramsar site. A Ramsar site is a wetland of international importance.

Lawari Conservation Park also shares a border with the Coorong National Park. This national park is on its south-eastern side.
